Research Interests

Chemical Modification

The C=C bonds in the polymer structure cause the poor resistance to thermal and oxidative degradation when exposed to harsh operating systems. The study of chemical modification has been an interesting field to improve or develop the structure of general diene polymers such as natural rubber, polybutadiene, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber etc. to use in the wider range of any applications. Our research works are related to saturate the structure of diene polymers via catalytic hydrogenation to increase its thermal and oxidative resistance. We have also studied the graft copolymerization of monomers onto natural rubber to use as a compatibilizer or an impact modifier.

Pyrolysis of Waste Tyres and Plastics

The huge tyre and plastic consumption in everyday life, which is doubly increased with the progress of population, technology and economy, leads to produce the large quantity of waste tyres and plastics every year. Since the waste tyres and plastics are mainly composed of the long chain of hydrocarbon, they have the possibility to be an alternative energy in the future due to their high heating value. Pyrolysis is the process involving the thermal degradation of materials under an oxygen-free atmosphere. Previous studies indicated that the pyrolysis process of tyre yields oil, non-volatile carbon black (or char) and hydrocarbon gases. The quantity of each product is mainly dependence on the pyrolysis conditions. Due to the energy depletion, the alternative energy recovered from waste materials has been the challenging research field for replacement of conventional fuel.
