Department of Chemical Technology was established in the Faculty of Science on July 14, 1959, growing out from Department of Chemistry. Upon its inception, Prof. Dr. Tab Nilanithi who was then the Dean and also Head of the department, foreseeing the prospects and necessity for Thai chemical industries, has set up a course in industrial chemistry which developed further to become Chemical Technology Department. He was regarded as the founder of the department.

Academic development in the department, more than half a century, has been based on chemical engineering principles with the incorporation of essential technologies for the development of Thai economy and industry into its curriculum. In so doing, Department of Chemical Technology has been a core for the development of material science and food technology. The two disciplines progressed further to become new departments in 1974 and 1984 respectively. Currently, the department offers two study programs under chemical engineering curriculum. One is a standard chemical engineering and the other is fuel technology. The department also offers graduate study for master degree and doctoral degree.

Until now, the department has granted more than 2000 Bachelor, 500 Master degree and 50 Ph.D. graduates. Most of them have taken professions in various economic sectors including oil refineries and chemical industries, academic institutes, government and private enterprises. They play important roles as entrepreneurs, executives, managers, plant production engineers, R & D scientists in those sector.
